In the early nineties, Dan Rothenberg was having a gay old time—literally. The woman happens to be his wife. Rothenberg and Colleen Crabtree, both 35, met seven years ago. Although it took about a year to admit to himself that his Castro days were over, one incident stands out. For Andrew Brin, who grew up in Milwaukee, it was all about girls—until he had sex with a guy at the end of his senior year of high school. In his early thirties, Brin started dating a man and came out to his brother. Amber Rose, the model and famed ex of Kanye West, recently stated that although she is attracted to men and women, she would not date a bisexual man. Despite this lingering stigma, the experiences of heterosexual women in committed relationships with bisexual men have never really been examined. But the new book Women in Relationships with Bisexual Men does exactly that. Co-authored by Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli, a lecturer in Social Diversity at Deakin University, and her co-researcher Sara Lubowitz, the work is based on the insights of 79 Australian women involved with bisexual men.
We spoke to Pallota-Chiarolli about her findings. Why did you decide to study the “straight women with bi men” dynamic? For the last eight years, I’ve been looking at issues around relationship diversity, and I found that women really wanted to talk about this, because it hadn’t been addressed. What were some of your most surprising findings? A really beautiful finding from a lot of the women interviewed, which has shocked a few people, is that a lot of bisexual men—if you dealt with issues around openness and negotiation—made better fathers, lovers, and partners than hetero men.
Why do you think these women reported that bi-sexual men made better lovers?

In many regards, bisexual men want the same things as everyone else when it comes to relationships. We want an honest partner. We want to.
That would happen later. First, I had to come out to myself. Growing up in a socially conservative religion, I was taught that sex was reserved for monogamously married men and women. Well, I could chalk that up to appraisal, not desire. Women check each other out all the time, I told myself. I want to be like them, not with them. And sure, I thought about kissing my best friend, but that was just hormones misfiring I blamed a lot on hormones misfiring. I was convincing.
I started having panic attacks in elementary school. Something was wrong with me, and somehow it was my fault.

Dating as a queer woman presents a unique set of issues. Men would either ask me to explain what the term meant, incorrectly assume they knew exactly what it meant, or completely misidentify me. It quickly became a frustrating ritual for me, a self-identified queer woman and someone with a graduate-level education in gender and queer studies, to constantly be in a position of educating.
See, a dildo is not like a penis, not really. Some of them are shaped like penises, but that has more to do with female anatomy than the penis itself. Queer women.

I’m A Lesbian Who Had A Sex Dream About A Guy
Recently, I endured a week more cursed than an image of Megyn Kelly smiling: two men asked for my number, and I gave it to them. That ship has sailed, and the thought of relapsing sends a shiver down my spine. And yet, within the span of one cursed week, I gave my contact info to two very forward men. The obvious one is fear of men.
Last year, four black lesbians were murdered in the same week in the U. I gave it away nonetheless.

The bisexual community has an inside joke that describes what it’s like to date as a bi person: People think it means double the options or double the fun, but it really just means double the rejection. Self-deprecating jokes like this one are at the core of the Single People Club regardless of sexuality, but bisexual people do face extra roadblocks in the dating world. True: Online dating sucks for everyone. Horny jerks disguise themselves as relationship seekers, your DMs are constantly filled with bad pickup lines and overly-persistent creeps, and many times, the site’s algorithm ignores the filters that you’ve set.
But the fact that there are no dating sites that cater specifically to bi people means that they’re frequently swiping on people who don’t take bisexuality seriously. The unique dating challenges that bi people face boil down to one rigid concept: being too gay for some and too straight for others. One of the most antiquated stereotypes about bisexual people is that they’re always down to fuck and down for polyamory.
Of course, they don’t mention this until later. No one is saying that threesomes are bad.
Why Bisexual Women Struggle In Lesbian Relationships
Before I met and married my husband, I was with my ex for 15 years, but only married for 6 months. That’s because I was with a woman when California legalized same-sex marriage. We had been the iconic lesbian couple: an artist and a writer — teachers and activists. People saw us as the perfect couple.
Is it our imaginations, or are wives and girlfriends ditching their men and falling in love with other women? New science says that sexuality is more fluid than we.
I felt like I was holding onto our memories all by myself. It caught my eye, not least of all because of the double entendre reference to the sexual act that would make a middle schooler and me, apparently giggle. In reality, my ex was probably learning how to deep clean the carpeting in her house. The house she shares with her husband and two kids. It was a joke, I know. But it stung.
I’m a Lesbian, and When My Ex-Girlfriend Married a Man, It Made Me Feel Erased
As far as first time lesbian experiences go, experimenting with someone of the same sex is thankfully less taboo than it’s ever been. More recently, in a study of college students, 12 percent of men and 25 percent of women whose last hookup partner was of the same sex as them considered themsleves straight. Exploring what it means to prioritize your pleasure is nothing to be ashamed about.
We asked women of all different sexual orientations about their first time lesbian experiences and same-sex encounters. Here are their stories:. In our early 30s, my husband and I decided to open our marriage to some sexual exploration and went on a date with a couple.
Dating apps are rarely built with lesbian, bisexual, and queer women in mind, but they can still work if you know how to use them right.
A large number of studies show that married people enjoy better health than unmarried people, such as lower rates of depression and cardiovascular conditions , as well as longer lives. However, these findings have been developed primarily based on data of heterosexual populations and different-sex marriages. Only more recently have a few studies looked into gay and lesbian populations and same-sex marriages to test if marriage is related to better health in these populations — and the evidence is mixed.
Our study , published online on Sept. We discovered that bisexual adults do not experience better health when married. Using representative data from the to National Health Interview Survey , we compared reports of self-rated health and functional limitation — difficulty doing activities without assistance or special equipment — across 1, bisexual adults, 2, gay and lesbian adults and , heterosexual adults. Both heterosexual and gay and lesbian individuals are better off in terms of health when they are married than when unmarried.
Why does this happen? There are two popular explanations. The marriage protection argument posits that marriage increases economic security and social support and encourages healthier lifestyles — for example, less smoking and drinking. The marriage selection argument suggests that people with more education, income and other health-favorable characteristics are more likely to get married and stay in marriage. However, unlike heterosexual and gay or lesbian adults, our study shows that married bisexuals are not healthier than unmarried bisexuals.
Ask Anna: I’m a straight man and I’m attracted to lesbians
Thanks to years of hard work by LGBT activists, people in certain corners of the world feel more comfortable about coming out than ever before. And yet, dating a man who identifies as bisexual remains a taboo. But by seeing bisexuality as a deal-breaker, heterosexual women might not only be unwittingly dodging perfectly decent partners, but the best. Research has found that men who are bisexual – and feel comfortable being out – are better in bed – and the relationship develops – more caring long-term partners and fathers.
Some women who took part in an Australian study even said they would never be able to go back to dating straight men at all.
Instead, I told myself that my attraction to women was just a side effect of growing more comfortable with my (straight) sexuality — basically a.
I’ve had sex with men — a lot of men. In fact, a major facet of my identity for most of my adult life was that I was open and irreverent about really liking sex and having a lot of it, largely with men. You could even argue that I built a career on it. But, in the last four years, that’s changed. I’m in the happiest, healthiest, and undoubtedly most grownup relationship of my life — and my partner is a woman. And, though I’ve always been vocal about my bisexuality, for the first time I’ve really started to experience bi erasure as a result of misinformation about what it really means to be bi.
